[ARCHIVED] Back By Popular Demand…Workshop on Raising Chickens in Your Backyard


The Agriculture and Natural Resources program of Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County is offering a second workshop this on Raising Chickens in Your Backyard on Tuesday, May 15, 2018. The popular workshop, of the new 2018 “Garden and Grow” workshop series, was first offered in February and immediately sold out. This second class, identical to the first workshop, will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Rutgers Cooperative Extension, 355 Courthouse - South Dennis Road, Cape May Court House, New Jersey.


The program will be presented by Jen Sawyer, Rutgers Master Gardener Coordinator for Cape May County. Participants will learn basic care of laying hens, breed selection, and feeding, housing and health requirements.


Jenny S. Carleo, County Agent, Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Cape May County, said, “We knew there was an interest for this topic, but could not believe just how popular it has proven to be to the Cape May County community.” Carleo added, “If someone is interested in this topic, they should register soon as I anticipate this workshop will sell out as well.”

The goal of “Garden & Grow” 2018 workshop series is to teach locals how to improve or expand their home gardens in new ways. Other upcoming topics include organic lawn care and the principles of organic growing.


This is a beginner class, therefore, no experience is needed. The cost for this workshop is $20 and includes dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by the program at 6 p.m.
